The History and Architecture of Our Beaux-Arts Hotel

As a historic building that has survived multiple uses throughout the decades, Hotel Chandler embodies New York City’s continually evolving character. Constructed more than a century ago, the building has hosted famous guests and stood as an architectural gem in the heart of Manhattan. The hotel features an array of contemporary comforts encased in a beautiful Beaux-Arts package – an authentic iron spiral staircase, original limestone façade and ornate carvings complement new additions and updates.

Artfully Updated Design Elements

Each of Hotel Chandler’s 12 floors recently underwent a full revitalization by designer Jane Capellini. The hotel’s updated design motif features elements meant to emphasize discovery. A mangrove tree root lamp set, 18th-century clock hands, limestone flooring and oak-paneled walls lend Hotel Chandler’s public spaces a calming-yet-adventurous aura. A mixture of furniture, light fixtures and textures come together in seamless and unexpected ways to create a cohesive feel and uniquely New York flavor.

The hotel’s recent renovation left plenty of room to showcase the hotel’s rich history. Many of the property’s original features have been incorporated into the new design to create a strong sense of place and era. The hotel lobby still prominently features the 1905 spiral staircase original to the building, and the Chandler Suites feature restored lion’s head fireplaces. These elements come together to create a tranquil oasis in the heart of America’s busiest city.

Hotel Chandler’s limestone façade, which dates back more than a century, has been restored to match its original state. The building’s Beaux-Arts details blend into the natural flow of the city but stand out as beautifully unique upon closer inspection.

A Rich History

In its earliest iteration, Hotel Chandler was known as Hotel Le Marquis. Built in 1905 by architects Buchman & Fox, who also designed the Sherry-Netherland Hotel, the hotel featured staying rooms with separate chambers, parlors, closets and bathrooms. The hotel’s most famous guest was business mogul Leona Helmsley, just one of many colorful characters to call the building home throughout the years.

Hotel Chandler was acquired by Triumph Hotels, which was originally founded in 1951 by the Horn family. Triumph Hotels currently operates six hotels in Manhattan, offering modern luxury, historic detail and warm personal service in the heart of the city.

Experience Hotel Chandler’s Revamped Look in the Heart of Midtown Manhattan

Have you seen Hotel Chandler’s new look? Chicly designed and abundant with luxurious features, our Midtown Manhattan hotel just completed in 2012 a $10-million renovation led by Jane Capellini from the Essex, CT-based firm Capellini Design Associates, unveiling a new revamped look for discerning jetsetters.

Our renovations completely overhauled our public spaces for a more refined gathering experience. Check out our lobby, and library room complete with a cozy fireplace. Guest room hallways are sophisticated and pave the perfect path to inviting guest rooms built for comfort and productivity at once. In designing the hotel’s new look, Capellini was able to preserve the architecture’s historical integrity while marrying it with contemporary comforts and distinctive furnishings to achieve a subtle elegance. We’re not done yet! Check back soon for a new fashionable cocktail bar, the Chandler Lounge and meeting space for timeless private events.

At Hotel Chandler, the smallest details make all the difference. The renovation incorporates natural materials, including glazed lava stone from France for the reception desk; slabs of hand- chiseled stone from Israel for the lobby floor; bulls-eye glass from New England; a mango root lamp from Guatemala; and French lime- stone keystones over the bar, which are carved in the shape of pineapples.

By spring of 2013, Hotel Chandler with reveal a new Midtown Manhattan restaurant that is sure to become a haunt for both locals and visitors alike. Juni will be a high-end culinary hotspot led by Executive Chef Sean Hergatt known for striking art deco presentations from a thoughtful three- to five-course a la carte menu that will change six times a year to showcase only the season’s freshest ingredients.
